Call for Papers: Application and Safety of Edible Films and Coatings in Food Packaging

We are pleased to invite researchers, academics, and professionals working in food science, materials science, and related disciplines to contribute to our Special Issue, "Application and Safety of Edible Films and Coatings in Food Packaging," published in Foods, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal by MDPI.

The growing demand for sustainable food-packaging solutions has encouraged research into edible films and coatings derived from natural biopolymers, including polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. These materials offer opportunities to reduce reliance on conventional plastic packaging while introducing functional properties that may improve food quality and preservation.

Despite these advances, important challenges remain concerning material safety, regulatory requirements, consumer acceptance, industrial scalability, and practical implementation.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles and reviews addressing the development, application, and safety of edible films and coatings in food packaging.

Areas of interest include:

- Innovative edible film and coating formulations. - Natural biopolymers and sustainable packaging materials. - Incorporation of bioactive compounds and nanoparticles. - Active food-packaging systems. - Safety assessment and regulatory considerations. - Industrial scalability and practical applications. - Sustainability and environmental impacts.
